Saturday 9th September – Tour of Britain
It’s not every day that some of the greatest riders in the contemporary pro peloton literally cycle past your doorstep, but on Saturday 9th September the Tour of Britain visits Oxfordshire and we have a rare opportunity to savour a fleeting glimpse of former World Champions, Grand Tour stage winners and Classics victors ripping up the same roads that we plod along week in, week out.
So to ensure we grab some of the action, the OCC club ride will be heading to Brill, where we will be linking up with the Cowley Road Condors (who have kindly extended an invite to OCC to join them at ‘Condors Corner’) to watch the ToB peloton flying by – see route details below.
The club ride will start at 9am as usual, but we need to be in Brill by 11.30am (the first riders should reach the village just before midday) so PLEASE ensure you arrive in time for a very prompt start from outside Ubyk on the Abingdon Road.
We’ll be heading northwards initially, taking in some of the roads that the likes of Philippe Gilbert, Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas will be negotiating later in the day, before taking a clockwise loop southwards to Brill.
If the weather behaves itself, then it should be a rather special and very unique club ride! (Bear in mind that we could be standing around for some time and the forecast is distinctly autumnal, so stashing a packable waterproof in your rear pocket might be the wise option).
The proposed route, which may have to be tweaked if time is tight, can be downloaded from Strava.
If you are joining an OCC club run for the first time, then we ask that you have a look at our ‘How We Ride’ page, which lists our calls, signals and how we like to ride as a bunch.
Please also note that the wearing of a helmet is mandatory and we ask anyone joining us to leave their ICE details on arrival and bring clothing necessary for the likely conditions, enough fuel/water to sustain you and ensure your bike is road worthy!
