OCC Trip to Girona 2026

In April 2026, eight members of Oxford Cycling Club travelled to Girona for five days of unforgettable road cycling. Staying at Hotel Peninsular, the group enjoyed a perfect central location, just a short walk from Eat Sleep Cycle — our regular stop for well-earned post-ride refreshments.

Here’s a brief overview of the rides:

Following a smooth transfer from Barcelona, Day 1 (41 km / 706 m) offered a relaxed introduction to the roads surrounding Girona. Rolling countryside, quiet lanes, poppy fields and spectacular scenery set the tone for the trip as the group climbed Els Àngels before descending back into the city.

Day 2 (120 km / 1,940 m) delivered the trip’s biggest challenge: the mighty Mare de Déu del Mont. One of the region’s longest, highest and toughest climbs, it tested the group with 19 km of relentless climbing. The reward at the summit was unforgettable — panoramic views across the Girona region, with the snow-capped Pyrenees stretching into the distance.

On Day 3 (130 km / 1,600 m), the route headed east towards the stunning Costa Brava coastline. After reaching the Mediterranean, the peloton followed winding coastal roads, enjoying endless sea views and glorious sunshine along one of the most scenic rides of the trip.

Day 4 (128 km / 1,526 m) saw the group tackle the Gran Fondo route — our final ride together. Thanks to a “chance” meeting between Matty and some Girona regulars, the group discovered a fantastic route heading north-west through charming rural villages and wonderfully quiet roads — a fitting finale to the week’s riding.

After four days of spectacular cycling, excellent food, countless ice creams in Girona’s beautiful old quarter, and unforgettable moments — including wildlife spotting from the city’s famous bridges — the group returned home already asking the same question: where next?
