OCC member and cake connoisseur Johnny Morrison pays a visit to Childrey, at the foot of The Ridgeway, and enjoys coffee, cake and chat with a cycling barista!
The village of Childrey lies on the northern edge of The Ridgeway on the B4001, which intersects with the B4507 about two miles west of Wantage.
Childrey Stores is essentially the local shop-cum-café, with a few tables and chairs both inside and outside the front window. Located on the High Street and set in a red brick terrace, with plenty of space to park several bikes safely off the road, it has that quaint village store charm.
The new co-owners, Gill, Jane and Floss, are very friendly and have tapped into the constant flow of cyclists heading towards The Ridgeway, both roadies and the lesser blessed on two wheels, and actively encourage cyclists to drop in and enjoy their fayre.
The fresh coffee is good and you’ll find a nice selection of pastries and cakes, plus sausage rolls and pasties too! There are even blankets sprinkled on the outside seating, if you want to keep your leg muscles warm! Situated in an area rich with good cycling terrain, it’s a great place to enjoy a café stop and if you don’t believe me, just ask James, the budding road racer who works there!
OCC member, Tony Trafford, enjoying a sneaky coffee at Childrey Stores
The village of Childrey hosts a popular sportive every spring and now it has an all-year round cycle-friendly café and it’s no surprise that it has quickly established itself as a firm favourite with cyclists since Gill, Jane and Floss took over in early 2017.
Childrey Stores is open from 8am-6pm (Monday to Friday), 9am-2pm on Saturday and 9am-Noon on Sundays.
